Job: Research Scientist position at Thomson Reuters R&D (London)

Position overview
The Research & Development group of Thomson Reuters
(http://labs.thomsonreuters.com) is looking for hands-on research
scientists or research engineers to grow the team and help drive
innovation at Thomson Reuters. This position is for our newly established
London R&D location. We are looking for a scientist who is passionate
about solving hard problems, who can design and develop prototypes to
demonstrate the art of possible and enjoys engaging the business to
explore opportunities.This position requires expertise in areas related to
organizing, finding, modelling and understanding of information from large
amounts of text and data feeds. Such areas include natural language
processing (summarisation, understanding, natural language text
generation, question answering, dialog management), information
extraction, text mining, data mining, applied machine learning/statistical
language modeling, information retrieval, recommender systems, network
analysis, statistical or probabilistic modeling.

DutiesAs a research scientist, you will be responsible for conducting
applied research and in staying current on state-of-the-art methods. You
will be expected to participate in multiple applied research projects and
your duties will include: authoring research plans, performing original
research (designing algorithms or feature sets for machine learning), and
designing experiments, validating key methods at scale and developing
prototypes. You will be expected to author technical reports and
whitepapers to survey areas of R&D to recommend on trends and the state of
the art in our focus areas. In addition, you are encouraged to maintain an
active academic presence through publication and conference attendance. As
a research engineer, a position that falls between research scientist and
software engineer, you will be responsible for system design and
implementation (the research scientist or research engineer distinction is
based on skills, experience and desired focus area of activities).

Qualifications

Qualifications
- Master¹s Degree (required) or Ph.D. (desired) in computer science,
computational linguistics, applied mathematics or a related discipline,
plus relevant industry research experience.
- Solid programming skills (e.g. in Java, Python, Scala, R and/or C/C++)
- Interest in solving real problems with big data creatively
- Background in natural language processing, text mining, and machine
learning/data mining or related field
- Good oral and written communication skills (be able to present to
internal business customers and at external international academic
- Conferences)
- Self-motivated and ready to learn new technologies to turn your ideas
into solutions used by Thomson Reuters customers
- Must be able to interact with diverse groups of technical and
non-technical people
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent research track record in natural language processing, machine
learning, information retrieval, data mining, or related field
- Strong working knowledge of statistical data analysis and experiment
design using R, WEKA, Matlab/Octave, Orange or similar tools
- Experience in hands-on processing, representation and transformation of
large amounts of data
- PhD degree in computer science, computational linguistics, or related
fields is considered desirable.Come join us.
