ACM Multimedia 2013 - Call for Brave New Idea Papers
------------------------------------------------------------
http://acmmm13.org/submissions/call-for-brave-new-idea-papers/

Brave New Ideas should address long term research challenges, point to new research directions, or provide new insights or brave perspectives that pave the way to innovation.
We thus seek contributions that explore innovative and paradigm shifts in conventional theory and practice of multimedia techniques and applications. We also seek to draw attention to methods that differ from the state of art in practice or theory and demonstrate the potential for new ways of thinking. Such papers may arise out of inter-disciplinary work, and may involve cross-disciplinary inputs. Although comprehensive experimental results are not required, at least preliminary results should be presented as proof of concept.

Submission Guidelines

The papers may come from two sources. We expect most papers to come from direct submissions in the “Brave New Idea Program”. These papers will be reviewed in two stages: Extended abstracts (2-pages) will be first filtered by the Brave New Ideas Program Chairs, and then selected papers (up to 10 pages) will undergo a full review plus discussions by the Chairs. Please submit 2-page abstracts in standard ACM MM 2013 format, with the exception that the papers need not be blind.
Meanwhile, at the discretion of the Program Chairs, submissions to regular full paper track may be recommended to the “Brave New Ideas Program” Committee for considerations to be included in the BNI program.

ECIR 2013 workshop "From Republicans to Teenagers - Group Membership and Search (GRUMPS)"

From Republicans to Teenagers: Group Membership and Search (GRUMPS)
ECIR 2013 workshop, Moscow, Russia
24th March, 2013

!!! - * Submission site now open -- Deadline is extended until January 18 * - !!!

In the early years of information retrieval, the focus of research was on systems aspects such as crawling, indexing, and relevancy ranking. Over the years, more and more user-related information such as click information or search history has entered the equation, creating more and more personalized search experiences, though still within the scope of the same overall system.

Though fully personalized search is probably desirable, this individualistic perspective does not exploit the fact that a lot of a user’s behavior can be explained through their group membership. Children, despite individual differences, share many challenges and needs; as do men, Republicans, Chinese or any user group.

This workshop, co-located with ECIR'13 in Moscow, takes a group-centric approach to IR and invites contributions that either (i) propose and evaluate IR systems for a particular user group or that (ii) describe how the search behavior of specific groups differ, potentially requiring a different way of addressing their needs.

The workshop will feature an invited talk by Daria Sorokina, senior data scientist at LinkedIn, with the title "Recruiters, Job Seekers and Spammers: Innovations in Job Search at LinkedIn".

Workshop web site

Topics of Interest

GRUMPS welcomes contributions on any issue concerning adapting search for specific user groups and, in particular, on:
· Understanding of search behavior and relevance criteria of specific user groups
· Identifying labeled user groups from search behavior
· Using specific user features (e.g. demographic) for personalized advertising/sponsored search
· Understanding the effects of domain expertise, age, user experience and cognitive abilities on search goals and results evaluation
· Development of test collections for evaluation of personalized search systems focused on users with specific features
· Search interfaces and result representation for people with specific needs and specific interests
