PhD positions in Ubicomp/HCI and IR/Data Mining at the University of Lugano, Switzerland

Two PhD positions in Comp. Science on Ambient Human Memory Augmentation
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Lugano (USI), Switzerland, is looking for candidates for two fully funded PhD positions, available for 3 years (starting 1 November 2013 or as soon as possible thereof), in connection with the EU project RECALL (FET-Open funding scheme).

*The Project*
-------------
RECALL aims to rethink and redefine the notion of memory augmentation. Recent developments in capture technology and information retrieval allow for continuous and automated recordings of many aspects of our everyday lives. RECALL will harness these trends and develop a new paradigm for memory augmentation technologies that are technically feasible, desired by users, and beneficial to society. RECALL will build on contemporary memory theories that highlight how technology augmented recall can be used to both re-enforce and attenuate memories. It will develop novel capture technologies and corresponding control mechanisms to automate the acquisition of personal memories, and investigate how feedback through ambient large displays and personal mobile devices can aid personal memory acquisition, retention, and attenuation.

*The positions*
---------------
One position will be in the area of Information Retrieval and Data Mining. In particular, you will research new methods and tools for the identification and retrieval of personal contextual information useful for triggering a user's recall of specific events. The work will be supervised by Prof. Fabio Crestani.

The second position will be on Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing, with particular focus on life-long capture interfaces as well as usable privacy and security. In particular, you will research new methods and tools for the contextual acquisition of recall-relevant daily events, and their secure and privacy-compliant storage and processing. The work will be supervised by Prof. Marc Langheinrich.

Your main responsibility will be to carry out research in the above two areas, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience and qualification as well.

*Our offer*
-----------
We offer a two full-time PhD positions with a competitive salary and social security insurances.  The year salary of a PhD student, in accordance with Swiss regulations, ranges from CHF 42,000 (gross) in the first year to CHF 48,000 (gross) in the last year. The University of Lugano provides excellent facilities for both professional and personal development, and the city of Lugano offers an enjoyable environment all year round.

*Your profile and application process*
--------------------------------------
Application are invited as soon as possible. Applicants are expected to already have a Master degree (or comparable level) in Computer Science, Information Science or closely related disciplines. Please send the following information to Prof. Marc Langheinrich (at marc.langheinrich@usi.ch) using the subject "RECALL PhD Position":

1. Motivation letter indicating your background and interests.
2. Full curriculum vitae, including a list of all courses and marks.
3. Contact information for at least two academic references.
4. Evidence of the command of English (fluent in writing and speaking).
