M.Tech: Choosing a Stream- S/W or Networking or pure CSE

We have been debating on options open to CSE graduates. One of the other choices being considered by our students is higher education namely M.Tech . Within this space, a student can choose GATE or PGCET.  Another important question is about  choosing among  (1)  Software Engineering  and Web Technology stream., (2) Networking and or pure Computer science.

Kindly add u r valuable guidance and help them make informed choice

  1. hi this is Bharati,
Stream depends on intrest. But according to priority in IT CNE and CSE are good.
And one more thing if some one wants to pursue pg then do it first then go for work else you will loose intrest.

If you want to earn and study then get through gate and do your mtech.

    ALL THE BEST

    -Regards

  2. I agree with Bharati, It better to complete the studies first and then look for job. If you work and later if u want to pursue studies it becomes difficult.
Regarding stream: Its the interest of individual. If he is very keen on research in networks then he can choose CNE. If he wants to be in a generalized field, then he can go for CSE. S/E is also like a general field but includes a lot of theoretical aspects.
Getting into MTech is by 2 ways, Qualify in GATE or else write PGCET (for MTech in VTU/BU).
If you qualify in GATE u would be getting stipend, but if you come through PGCET, u have to bear all the study expenditure.

  3. Thanks Prof Ravindra for posing an important question about CSE PG option. Let it be any specialization either Software Engineering or networking, i think important component missing is practical / research orientation, publications, conferences and workshops which are really helpful for students to understand the important in their chosen CSE domain and helpful in their future career.

  4. I think any M.Tech. so long as its syllabus is not proper, is worthless! By 'proper' I mean, syllabus with less of theory and more of practical examples, case studies, real life scenarios, experience sharing, making people work on such cases so that students can 'Master' the subject. Just going through the contents once again after you've already done in your B.E. is really pointless. Many of the books suggested (by VTU M. Tech. syllabus) are unheard of. I'd rather rename our M. Tech. as B.E.(R) where R means 'Repeated'! :-)

Industries do not really bother whether you hold an M.Tech. or not so long as your performance is very good though some of them give some weightage to it. Irony is even if a person has many years of industry experience, if s/he doesn't have an M.Tech. educational institutions don't recognize it.

So whether to do M. Tech. or not is purely dependent on which career will one opt for - Industry or college. However, I think doing masters from IIT cadre institutions should certainly be a value add though.

  5. Hi this is Seema,
Its better ,to complete your studies first, since
once you loose the touch it would be difficult to sit and read. And as industry openings are not stable yet,its better to finish your degree.
From study point of view we will really widen our thought as after 8th sem project we do understand project and its importance. And as double degree is also a plus point in many reasons.
