PhD position at IRIT (Toulouse) in Opinion analysis and synthesis

PhD student position at IRIT (Toulouse) and CEA:
Opinion analysis and synthesis:  Exploiting spatio-temporal and social contexts

Description:
The large amount of information generated in social networks brings new opportunities and new applications, interesting for some of them in terms of markets, and very useful and important for others in terms of security (cyber security).
The topic of this thesis deals with cyber security and it mainly concerns opinion analysis. Our goal is to develop solutions (approaches) to automatically detect and synthesize opinions about a given subject. We will be interested on opinions (comments, feedbacks) about people or event by considering their spatiotemporal context.

Opinion analysis is an active area where numerous approaches, including those based on NLP (Natural language Processing), opinion lexicons or machine learning have been proposed to detect the polarity (subjectivity of text and its polarity (positive, negative, neutral)) of a text. Beyond simply assigning a polarity opinion of a text, a more detailed analysis is often required to have a better characterization of the opinion, for instance find out which object or which facets/aspects of the object are concerned by the opinion. Although several approaches have been proposed including rule-based models or statistics, some research issues remain open, especially when we deal with short texts such as tweets and when we consider the social and the spatio-temporal contexts of the concerned topic. These later, particularly, the spatio-temporal context, is of great importance when we aim at building a summary or a synthesis of opinions about a topic.

The aim of this thesis is to develop and evaluate approaches that are capable to produce a consolidated opinion summary/synthesis about a given topic (event, person) by considering the social and the spatio-temporal contexts surrounding the concerned topic (event).

Candidate Profile
:  Applicants should have an excellent degree (M.Sc., M.Eng. or equivalent) in Computer Science.
Application: Detailed CV, academic records, motivation letter and recommendation letters
, to be sent to Mohand Boughanem (boughanem@irit.fr)

Mohand BOUGHANEM – IRIT and  Romaric BESANCON – CEA Tech LIST/DIASI/LVIC
Funding: Doctoral allowance funded by "Contrat Laboratoire Entreprise CEA-IRIT

7 tips for landing a job at a coding competition

Hackathons have been derided for stifling innovation and chilling the vibe of camaraderie. But that doesn't have to always be the case.
Take the example of the January 2014 GlobalHack contestin St. Louis that was initially attended by several hundred programmers. The story of the contest isn't who took away the top $50,000 prize but about the other participants who didn't finish in the money but came away with something else that is arguably more important.
One of the contest's biggest sponsors was a growing startup called TopOpps. After the contest ended in early February, it hired ten of the participants to build its entire development team. What is interesting is whom they chose and how their future employees' participation at the contest presaged their selection. For complete story see here

The 6th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science – CLOSER 2016

Scope:
The 6th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science, CLOSER 2016, focuses on the emerging area of Cloud Computing, inspired by some latest advances that concern the infrastructure, operations, and available services through the global network. Further, the conference considers as essential the link to Services Science, acknowledging the service-orientation in most current IT-driven collaborations. The conference is nevertheless not about the union of these two (already broad) fields, but about Cloud Computing where we are also interested in how Services Science can provide theory, methods and techniques to design, analyze, manage, market and study various aspects of Cloud Computing.
CLOSER 2016 will be held in conjunction with CSEDU 2016, SMARTGREENS 2016, WEBIST 2016, VEHITS 2016 and IoTBD 2016.

CONFERENCE AREAS:
Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub-topics list is not exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the listed sub-topics, although authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related sub-topics are also acceptable, provided they fit in one of the following main topic areas:

1. CLOUD COMPUTING FUNDAMENTALS
2. SERVICES SCIENCE
3. CLOUD COMPUTING PLATFORMS AND APPLICATIONS
4. CLOUD COMPUTING ENABLING TECHNOLOGY
5. BIG DATA AS A SERVICE

Assistant Professor in Computer Science at University of Southern Denmark

Apply at: http://bit.ly/1HvwMl9

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense, invites applications for a position as assistant professor in computer science. The appointment lasts for three years and is expected to start by 1 March 2016. Contingent on successful completion of a lecturer training programme and positive performance evaluation, a position for associate professor is normally opened when the appointment ends, for which the assistant professor can apply.

The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD in computer science and a strong track record of research at a high international level, in an area that complements or supplements our existing research activities. In particular, areas interesting to us include (but are not limited to) the following: 1) Database Systems; 2) Concurrent and Distributed Systems; 3) Data Mining, for instance in biological and health based settings.

In addition to research the applicant must be able to teach and advise in computer science at all levels (undergraduate through PhD) as well as teach in a broad range of core computer science areas at the undergraduate level.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a prerequisite for application. More English than Danish is used when teaching in computer science, and more than half of the faculty members in computer science are foreigners. However, the primary administrative language at SDU is Danish and the candidate, who wishes to apply for an associate professor position after the assistant professor appointment, should therefore be willing to acquire Danish reading abilities within a few years, in order to also contribute to the administrative tasks.

For further information on the department and its research and teaching activities, see its home page <http://www.sdu.dk/en/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/Imada_matematik_og_datalogi> or contact research leader Rolf Fagerberg, phone: +45 28 21 17 77, e-mail: rolf@imada.sdu.dk.

Application, salary etc.
Appointment to the position will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae
• A full list of publications
• Copies of all publications on which the applicant wishes to be evaluated
• A brief survey of the applicant's most important research results and research plans for the next three years.

Please note that applicants are expected to have completed their PhD.

The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of age, gender, religious affiliation, or ethnic background.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link below. Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. Please read How to apply <http://sdu.dk/en/servicenavigation/right/ledige_stillinger/jobs/Soegjob> before you apply.

Since not all members of the appointment committee are Danish-speaking, it is recommended that your application is submitted in English.
