Meet Hugo — a mobile app that delivers briefs in those time-critical moments leading up to a meeting or phone call. Hugo's news summaries provide relevant information to strike up a conversation and build professional relationships.

We believe that better data is a critical part of the solution, and we're looking for Data Scientists and Data Engineers to join our team of IR, NLP, and ML experts.

We are building platform tools to accurately curate news and related content. We are particularly interested in collaborative approaches that combine human and machine intelligence. We believe there are many opportunities in Hugo and beyond.

Here are some examples of what we're working on:

• Creating a comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge base of people, companies and locations by unifying Wikipedia with other data sources.
• Ensuring the accuracy of our data through algorithmic validation (e.g., learnt confidences over machine extractors and human contributors).
• Building data infrastructure to ingest and transform news and related text data.
• Developing NLP models for identifying and resolving entity mentions in text, summarising text, extracting descriptions of entities, etc.
• Deriving search strategies for retrieval and ranking across various signals (e.g., query relevance, user relevance, entity centrality, result set diversity).

What we don't care about:

• High degrees and grand titles. We've got some of those, and it's ok if you do too. But we care about what you can actually do more than the letters after your name.
• Specific technologies. R vs Matlab? Python vs Scala vs Spark? We want you to help make technology choices and build great products.

What we do care about:

• Your experience. We're a small team, so we need people who can hit the ground running and learn new things along the way.
• How you develop ideas and insights with data. We are building a unique curation and analytics platform, using data-driven design at every stage of development.
• That you're a self-starter and a quick study. We're a startup, so everyone contributes to design, product, front end, and back end.
• Your high standards and judgment on what matters. We appreciate people who want to excel at everything, but the best are those who know how to prioritise and deliver.
• Your desire to build next-generation tools for intelligent curation. We are passionate about our data. We are seeking teammates that share our vision.
