PhD Opportunity In Information Retrieval Technology
The University of Melbourne/Microsoft

Devices and modes for expressing and interacting with information are
diversifying quickly, from PCs, tablets, smartphones to fitness bands, game
consoles, and other forms of naturalistic interfaces.  Within the University
of Melbourne and Microsoft's joint research centre (Microsoft Research Centre
for Social NUI, http://www.socialnui.unimelb.edu.au/) in this area we have
a new initiative to explore search and query formation technologies.

We are seeking two outstanding students to carry out a PhD in this area,
who will receive a stipend jointly provided by Microsoft and the University
of Melbourne. The successful applicants will have a background in computer
science and information retrieval, with demonstrated coding, analysis,
and mathematical & statistical skills.

PhD position in searching digital archives at the University of Sheffield

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship investigating entity-centric methods for information exploration and discovery in big digital archives, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and the UK National Archives.

Project description:
The UK National Archives seeks to collect and secure the future of the public record in all its forms and to make it as accessible as possible. We are seeking a PhD student to help shape the future of information exploration and discovery in big digital archives. There is a clear need for cultural heritage institutions (archives, libraries and museums) to provide systems that go beyond keyword-based search and support more diverse information seeking behaviours, such as browsing and exploration of large collections. Entities, such as people, places, organisations and events, can be extracted from the archive and linked to form a network that users can explore in addition to navigating the content directly. This project aims to investigate the performance of entity-centric methods and develop prototype systems to better understand how entity-based networks can best support users exploration of large digital archives.

Funding & eligibility:

The Studentship is tenable for a maximum of three years, commencing October 2015 and available only to Home/EU students. It will cover fees and a stipend (£14,057 per year in 2015/16). UK students will be eligible for a full award which pays fees and a maintenance grant if they meet the residency criteria. EU students will be eligible for a fees-only award, unless they have been resident in the UK for 3 years immediately prior to taking up the award.

Candidates should:
• have (or expect to have by Autumn 2015) a good masters degree in computer science, library and information science, or related disciple with at least 60% weighted mean and 60% in the dissertation component.
• if not graduated from a majority English speaking country, evidence of a recognised English language qualification equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.
Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research methods, ability to work independently, excellent written and oral communications skills, knowledge of formal research process, including writing and presenting results/findings. Applicants will also have strong analytical skills, programming skills, and a genuine interest in designing, building and publishing innovative approaches and systems to explore large-scale archive data.

TWO PHD POSITIONS IN COMPUTATIONAL MODELS OF LANGUAGE AND VISION 

Two PhD positions/studentships to study computational models of
language and vision are available at the University of Trento (Italy):
One in the Language, Interaction and Computation track of the 3-year
PhD program offered by the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences
(www.unitn.it/en/cimec); one in the 3-year ICT Doctoral School (http://ict.unitn.it/).

The PhD programs (start date: November 2015) are taught in English by an
international faculty. The selected PhD student will work within the CLIC laboratory, an interdisciplinary group
of researchers studying language and conceptualization using both
computational and cognitive methods (clic.cimec.unitn.it).

The topic of the PhD thesis will be defined with the student selected
as PhD candidate. Possible research directions include:
Compositionality in images; Methaphors in images; Searching for images
through natural language queries; Language, vision and reasoning. The
selected student will work closely with the research team of
the ERC project COMPOSES (http://clic.cimec.unitn.it/composes/).

* Desired Profile *

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, we seek a brilliant
student with at least some of the following background:

- Machine learning
- Computer Vision
- Natural Language Processing
- Good programming skills

The CLIC lab (clic.cimec.unitn.it) is a unit of the University of
Trento's Center for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC,
www.unitn.it/en/cimec), an English-speaking, interdisciplinary center
for research on brain and cognition whose staff includes
neuroscientists, psychologists, (computational) linguists, computer
scientists and physicists.

CLIC consists of researchers from the Departments of Computer Science
(DISI) and Psychology and Cognitive Science (DiPSCo) carrying out
research on a range of topics including concept acquisition,
corpus-based computational semantics, combining NLP and computer
vision, combining brain and corpus data to study cognition, formal
semantics and theoretical linguistics.

CLIC is part of the larger network of research labs focusing on

concentration of researchers in NLP and related fields anywhere in

PhD position in statistical language modelling at Cardiff University

Applications are invited for a PhD Scholarship at the Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics in the area of statistical language modelling.

Project description:
The aim of the project will be to develop methods for modelling the meaning of natural language terms, based on data from social media and other web sources. For example, by analysing the tags associated with Flickr photos, the developed methods will be able to learn that a church is a kind of building, that churches tend to be larger than typical buildings and that chapels are similar to churches. The results of this project will be used to improve methods from artificial intelligence for commonsense reasoning, and will among others enable more intelligent web search engines.

Funding & eligibility:
This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year). This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Students classified as international for fee purposes have to self-fund the difference between home and international fees.

Candidates should:
• either have (or expect to have by Autumn 2015) a good honours degree in a relevant discipline (minimum 2:1); 
• or have a masters degree with distinction in the research dissertation in a relevant discipline; 
• or have professional qualifications deemed by Cardiff University to be equivalent to the above; 
• or be over 25 and have relevant work experience in a position of responsibility.

The methods will rely heavily on methods from statistics and linear algebra, hence a strong background in mathematics will be required, in addition to excellent programming skills. A strong mathematical background and excellent programming skills will also be required.

Job description:
The work will be conducted in the informatics, image and interaction laboratory (L3i), within the Tourinflux project, funded by a public investment program for the future (PIA). The L3i is a 120-person laboratory created in 1993. Hosted in the historical and sunny city of La Rochelle (http://www.holidays-la-rochelle.co.uk/), it is ranked A by the French research evaluation agency (AERES).

In addition to the L3i, the Tourinflux project involves 2 companies and the professional association for the digital economy, in collaboration with several actors of the French tourism industry. The project aims at providing actors of the tourist industry with a set of tools allowing them to handle both their internal data, and the information available on the Web, so as to better diagnose and influence on the perception of territories. The tools currently available are insufficient, and a lot of the data gathering, analysis and processing is currently done by hand, or via the use of various tools that are only partially satisfactory. Tourinflux aims to provide an extensive dashboard, allowing all institutions, whatever their size, to visualize and interpret the information available about their territory. This should allow them to improve their decision process and subsequently, their effectiveness.

Specifically, this postdoctoral position will focus on the automated extraction of touristic events and/or opinion mining over touristic objects. Both subjects will be considered on equal grounds and the ability of the candidate will be the main recruitment criteria. The techniques to be used will need to be applicable to any language.

  1. (Semi)-automated extraction of touristic events:
Tourism information is both heterogeneous (free text, Web page, pictures, …) and semi-structured. Extracting touristic information is a major challenge at a time when the masses of unstructured information are constantly evolving, be it on the Web or within organizations. The task of the recruited postdoctoral researcher will be to extract touristic events and insert information into a given representation model. Two key challenges were identified:
  • Adapting NLP techniques to the specific domain of tourism information, and extract the key features of the field
  • Understanding and feeding the given models of representations for touristic data.

Recent work on the temporal analysis of natural language, so as to grasp the opening hours of touristic objects remains to be integrated. It will be a plus if the recruited postdoctoral researcher is able to integrate this work within the event extraction process.

  1. Sentiment analysis over touristic objects
The postdoctoral researcher will be in charge of extracting sentiment from online data, e.g, evaluation platforms (such as tripadvisor), blogs, microblogs, … The extracted data is to be adapated to our own opinionated mark-up language (see, eg, SentiML). This task will require three steps:
  • Given a touristic object, fetch online information about it;
  • Extract sentiment about the object;
  • Fill our annotation schema.

Specific requirements:
Candidates must have PhD in computer science, with abilities in knowledge representation and data mining. Research experience is also required in at least 2 of the following domains:
  • Natural Language Processing, Text mining
  • Information Retrieval
  • Big Data and Data Warehouses (eg, Hadoop)
  • Modeling, Ontologies and inference engines
  • Annotation and Evaluation methodologies

General requirements:
  • One or more of the following programming languages: Python, C/C++, java…
  • Team-work skills (knowledge of Agile methodologies would be a plus)
  • Proven ability for scientific writing

We're hiring: 1 PhD student, 2 postdocs at the University of Amsterdam

We are looking for high-potential candidates to form a team to work on optimizing the creative retrieval process for the media industries.

The research will focus on the development of new algorithms for generating narrative search engine result pages to be used by media professionals. Doing so will require new information retrieval techniques, which will be tested in collaboration with the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. It also requires developing a thorough understanding of the information seeking behavior of media professionals.

We are looking for candidates for a fully funded four-year PhD position in information retrieval, a three-year postdoc in media studies, and a three-year postdoc in information retrieval for the creative industries.
