The Research & Development department for Thomson Reuters (http://labs.thomsonreuters. com/) is looking for a hands-on research scientist in their St Paul, MN to grow the team and drive innovation at Thomson Reuters.
Do you want to use your passion for technology to help build the knowledge economy? Are you interested in challenging and cutting edge technology projects? As a Research Scientist, you will be responsible for conducting applied research in information retrieval or machine learning applied to search, and staying current on state-of-the-art methods. You will be expected to design, implement and validate algorithms and ideas on large scale real world problems specific to Thomson Reuters. You will have an opportunity to collaborate with technologists and business stakeholders on the transition of your research to products. In addition, you will be able to maintain an active academic presence through publication and conference attendance.
This position requires significant expertise in the areas of information retrieval, recommender systems or applied machine learning. You are very familiar with IR models (language models, vector space, Bayesian nets) and tools (Lucene, Indri, Terrier, stemming) as well as learning to rank approaches. You have experience with feature engineering to solve search problems and enjoy digging into query logs. You are looking to apply your skills to conceive and implement creative solutions to real-world problems. You support your ideas with data and strong experimental design.
Working closely with product and development groups, your ideas will have a direct impact of Thomson Reuters’ products.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in computer science, computational linguistics, applied mathematics or a related discipline, plus 3 years of relevant industry research experience.
Background in Information Retrieval, Recommender Systems or applied Machine Learning
Solid programming skills (e.g. in Python, Perl, Java, C/C++)
Good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to provide technical leadership
Preferred Qualification:
PhD degree in computer science, computational linguistics, applied mathematics or a related discipline. Industry research experience is a plus.
Excellent research track record in information retrieval, usage analytics, or recommender systems. Additional experience in a related field such as machine learning, document classification, matrix and graph algorithms, natural language processing or text mining is a plus.
Strong working knowledge of statistical data analysis and experiment design using R, WEKA, Matlab, etc.
Experience in hands-on processing, representation and transformation of large amount
Position and compensation commensurate with experience.
