The School of Computing Science and Digital Media and IDEAS Research Institute invite applications for a Reader (Associate Professor) in Computing Science to support the future growth of the School.
The IDEAS Digital Technologies theme is the centre of research in the School of Computing Science and Digital Media. The group has a strong research profile and good research links through the Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), NRP's Computational Systems group and international collaborations.
The post is designed to expand and strengthen our research in Intelligent Information Systems, in areas related, or complementary, to 'big data', secure and/or cloud-based systems. Big data in oil and gas is a major theme of our future research strategy. Candidates in other areas of applied computing, in particular those related to energy or smart cities, are also encouraged to apply.
We are looking for innovative researchers of international standing with a strong track record of research funding and international quality publications, and the vision and leadership skills to play a central role in the development of research and partnerships. The successful candidates will have the ability to attract leading researchers and high quality students, and will contribute to relevant areas of teaching as appropriate. Relevant experience through industrial/commercial activities would be welcomed.
The School and IDEAS will be a significant part of a new £100 million building, completing RGU's move to its Garthdee riverside campus in summer 2013. The IDEAS research hub is home for the Graduate School and research projects, and is adjacent to the academic hub for the School.
Interviews will be in person during the week commencing 10th June.

Job description

Labs have the opportunity to work on a variety of project types, including: rapid prototype and proof‐of‐concept development, research engineering libraries, tools, and platforms for distributed computing and algorithm evaluation, as well as working as part of a team directly with Yahoo! scientists.
In this position you will be working together with our scientists to develop novel algorithms for processing and mining extremely large amounts of data coming from user action logs and social networks.
Required skills/qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in Computer Science, with 2+ years of practical experience (Master degree is a plus);

• Fast learner with strong problem‐solving and analytical skills;
• Proven ability to develop software solutions for complex design/implementation problems;
• Familiarity with concepts of data mining and machine learning;

The NLP group at the University of Sheffield is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship on computing veracity of social media content.
Application closing date is 31 May 2013.
The aim of this studentship is to design natural language processing methods to compute veracity of social media content and deal with the specifics of medical language. The goal is to model, identify, and verify healthcare-related misinformation and disinformation, as they spread across online media (e.g. patient forums) and social networks. Natural language processing (NLP) now provides many indispensable tools for working with large unstructured text collections, allowing effective search, information extraction and translation. Social media content poses a number of difficult and interesting NLP research challenges. The studentship will also involve a close collaboration with healthcare researchers from a large NHS trust and opportunities for working with natural language processing of clinical records.
The PhD studentship will be associated to a larger research project about developing novel cross-disciplinary social semantic methods, combining document semantics, a priori large-scale world knowledge (e.g. Linked Open Data) and a posteriori knowledge and context from social networks, past user behaviour, and spatio-temporal metadata. The research will also involve use of and further development of GATE (http://gate.ac.uk), which is a leading open-source NLP toolkit, developed by an established team of 12 researchers.
Candidates should have a First Class Honours or a good 2.1 degree in Computer Science and have excellent computer programming skills. Experience with natural language processing and machine learning techniques is essential, and detailed knowledge of biomedical NLP, medical ontologies, and Linked Open Data are highly desirable. A background in linguistics and/or fluency in multiple languages would also be desirable, but is not strictly necessary.
The grant will cover all study fees for EU and UK nationals and a living stipend for three years plus a travel fund for attending collaborative meetings and international conferences.

What is the role of the internet in politics and during political campaigns and what is the role of large amounts of user data in all of this?
In the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign the Democrats were again more successful than the Republicans in utilizing online media for mobilization, co-ordination, fundraising and micro-targeting. Social media and the Internet play a fundamental role in political campaigns. However, technical research in this area has been surprisingly limited and fragmented.
The goal of this workshop, held at CIKM 2013 in Burlingame/San Francisco, is to bring together researchers working at the intersection of social network analysis, computational social science and political science, to share and discuss their ideas in a common forum; and to inspire further developments in this growing, fascinating field of computational political science.
The workshop topics include but are not limited to:
* Classifying users according to political leaning
* Classifying web queries and web pages according to political leaning
* Discovering political topics from search logs and social media data
* Describing and quantifying political campaigns and their effect on online media
* Influence of political fact checking (e.g. Politifact) on rumor spreading
* Visualizing political issues and other socio-economic controversies
* Applying sentiment analysis to find positive/negative aspects of issues
* Quantifying the effects of a 'Daily Me' or filter bubble in political search and content
* Prediction markets for election prediction
The workshop will include Rayid Ghani, former Chief Scientist at Obama for America 2012 campaign, as a keynote speaker, a panel discussion with scientists and media experts, as well as presentations of accepted contributions. The schedule will provide time for both organized and open discussion.

Papers should be no longer than 8 pages (2-column), including all references, figures and appendices. Shorter papers describing work in progress are explicitly encouraged, though there is no separate short paper track. Please submit your papers through
Submissions should follow the ACM SIG proceedings format http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates (Option 2). The review process will be single-blind and the authors do *not* need to anonymize their submission.
All papers must be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Please ensure that any special fonts used are included in the submitted documents. All papers must be original and must not be under review or have been published elsewhere.
At least one author of each accepted paper will be required to present their work at the workshop. Accepted workshop papers will be published in the CIKM workshop proceedings, which will be printed on CD only and indexed in the ACM digital library, together with the main CIKM 2013 proceedings.
