Faculty Position: iSchool at University of Tsukuba (Interactive Information Retrieval)


Outline 
Faculty of Library, Information and Media Science at University of Tsukuba invites applications for an international tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level who will conduct international research in Interactive Information Retrieval. Upon appointment, a successful candidate will stay in School of Computing Science at University of Glasgow (UK) as a faculty member of University of Tsukuba, and carry out international collaborative research [with Prof. Jose in the Information Retrieval (IR) group] for two or more years. After the visiting period, the candidate will perform research, teaching, supervision, and committee work at University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Japan.

Department of Library, Information and Media Stuides at University of Tsukuba is a member of iSchool, and one of the largest iSchool institutions in Asia with more than 60 interdisciplinary faculty members. A successful candidate will join the department to strengthen the research in Information Retrieval by developing international collaboration with IR group at University of Glasgow.

Contract
Full-time (Fixed-Term, 5 years)
A candidate may obtain a tenured position before the end of contract.

6) At least 4 peer-reviewed publications in the last 5 years

Senior Researcher opening at Qatar National Library: working with SeerSuite, Solr/Lucene, Heritrix, digital libraries, web archiving

I am writing to pass along an exciting job announcement, with very good

I serve as Lead Principal Investigator on a 3 year project to advance
digital library technologies and community in Qatar.
Other US co-PIs include C. Lee Giles at Penn State (developer of
SeerSuite) and Rick Furuta at Texas A&M.
The PI at Qatar University is Mohammed Samaka. John Impagliazzo is one
of the consultants.

The Qatar National Library is a partner in this project, and has an
opening, for a senior researcher to work at QNL.

1. Job Details:
Position Title: Senior Researcher
Division: Library Information Technology
Reports to: Associate Director for Library IT

Department: Qatar National Library

2. Job Purpose:
The applicant is expected to contribute towards the research efforts of the NPRP project of Qatar University, and the Penn State University along with Qatar National Library and to develop his/her research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to the particular field of research that will enable new discovery and applications. He/She will work as part of a research team developing new research objectives, methodology and solutions relating to Digital Society Research in areas concerning Arab Language technologies or any other relevant area that will help transform the State of Qatar into a Digital Society. The incumbent will conduct research, validate and analyse results with minimum supervision, under the supervision of AD for Library IT and /or Senior Scientist of Qatar University.

4. Key Result Areas:
* Conduct Research under limited supervision either as a member of a team under the direct supervision of AD Library IT or Senior scientist or, where appropriate, independently, that contributes toward the recognition of marked distinction in its area of research.
* Perform day-to-day experimental activities and ensure proper and accurate documentation for future referencing.
* Collect and analyze data to achieve the most optimal solution for the research projects
* Develop and design prototypes utilizing the appropriate tools, methodologies and techniques to achieve the required results of the project.
* Prepare findings and recommendations report on the conducted analysis and research and present to the research team ensuring the accuracy of the findings.
* Prepare research reports, periodicals and articles periodically as requested.
* Contribute to the research activities for attaining the project's objectives. Such activities may include: requirements' determination, design, project management, evaluation, writing articles, etc.
* Install, enhance, customize and operate SeerSuite
* Crawl web to enhance database with new types of collection
* Supervise and Assist technical staff in work with SeerSuite software.
* Ensure appropriate records and documentation of research experiments, samples examined are maintained and regularly updated while ensuring accuracy of research data
* Contribute to the project's consulting center at QU, including providing consultation to local organizations and in the delivery of professional training sessions on the SeerSuite software in particular, both on site and remotely.
* Perform miscellaneous duties and conduct special projects as assigned
* Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility.
* Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner.
* This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position

5. Operating Environment, Framework & Boundaries:
The Researcher must adhere to all applicable QF and Library Policies & Procedures and must ensure all policies and procedures comply with global standards and leading practices. The incumbent must ensure that all digitization activities within the Qatar National Library conform to relevant legislation, such as, Data Protection, Freedom of Information, Copyright etc. The incumbent will be located in the Qatar National Library and will perform work in a normal office environment.

6. Communications and Working Relationships:
* Associate Director Library Information Technology– application development, Software selection, evaluation, debugging, testing, on work progress and escalation of issues,
* External Stakeholders – local initiatives on web archiving, Qatar University, Penn State University, Texas A&M University
* Other staff – on further development of digital collections, conservation, preservation, education and library resources online.

7. Problem Solving & Complexity:
The Post Doctorate Researcher is required to conduct research, analysis and programming as well as using the most suitable approach to design prototypes to achieve the most optimal solution to meet the objective of the research program. This position requires a great depth of expertise and knowledge in the field of web crawling.

8. Decision Making Authority & Responsibility:
The Post Doctorate Researcher is required to conduct his/her own research or contributing to the research of the assigned projects and present findings. The incumbent must have the ability to exercise good judgment in decisions related to recommending projects. The incumbent has the ultimate decision to recommend products for purchase to the Associate Director Library Information Technology and the Qatar National Library Director. This position is responsible for the further development of the Seersuite software in Arabic context and enhance the web archiving database with more content.

9. Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
* Ph.D. degree in a subject related to information retrieval and information extraction
* Experience with Solr/Lucene indexing, Heritrix or similar system
* Experience collaborating with other stakeholders
* Knowledge of copyright, intellectual property rights
* Experience of digital library standards, such as, Dublin Core, MARC, METS, EAD, and OAI-PMH.
* Excellent testing and troubleshooting capabilities.
* Knowledge of Structural METADATA and Descriptive METADATA, Taxonomy, Ontology
* Excellent time management, presentation and verbal and written communication skills.
* Excellent Problem solving and analytical skills.

Multiple Faculty Positions in Health Informatics – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – Carolina Health Informatics Program
Several academic units at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are actively seeking candidates in the broadly defined area of health informatics.  The selected colleagues will become core faculty members in the Carolina Health Informatics Program.  The successful candidates are expected to start in the 2014-2015 academic year and their tenure home will be located in one of the CHIP partner units currently recruiting candidates.
