Open position: Research Associate in Large Scale Data and Information Normalisation and Integration

The Department of Computer Science has a position for Research Associate in Large Scale Data and Information Normalisation and Integration. The position is supported by the externally funded WeSenseIt research project, supported by the European Commission as part of FP7.

WeSenseIt (www.wesenseit.eu) is a multi-site, multi-disciplinary project involving researchers and industrial partners in web technologies, environment, sensing, as well as social media monitoring. Working together with the EU and our sister projects this project aims to develop a new concept of citizen observatories of water creating a two communication channel between authorities and citizens in cooperating to monitor rivers, covering water quality to flooding. In order to create these observatories we will be providing the technological method, by working with data from, social media (Facebook and Twitter), physical sensors, our developing mobile applications and even from the creation of our own novel low cost sensors. It is our task to develop these sensors so that the general public can build them themselves. We will also be working towards methods to integrate data provided by these areas into a models and solutions that supports both parties.  

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with other researchers working on the project, both in Sheffield and at partners' sites across Europe. Interacting with citizens is of particular importance and therefore an excellent command of the English language is required.

Given the project's aims, a strong background in computer science and software engineering is essential, as is knowledge of web technologies and crowdsourcing. Strong programming skills in Java, Javascript, HTML, PHP are essential. Programming skills in Python are desirable. Experience in client server architectures is required (for example use of Apache Tomcat, Json, etc.). Experience with some or all of the following specific areas is highly desirable: information integration and human computer interaction.

Appointment will be made at either Research Assistant (Grade 6) or Research Associate (Grade 7) depending on skills and experience of the candidate. If appointed at the higher Grade 7, the appointee must have more experience in information and data integration and knowledge of big data methods; and will be expected to play a more responsible role including.

• Input to the research direction of the project.
• Design and implement methods for information and data integration over large scale and associated web technologies.
• Design of experiments to evaluate the components and systems developed in the project.

The German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF)
(http://www.dipf.de/) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is a member of the

At DIPF, the research unit "Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing Lab" at the
Information Center for Education (located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany) is
looking for an

Research Scientist for Automated Language Processing / Text Mining / Digital
Humanities (three-year contract, full time, EG13 TV-H*)

The position is situated in the context of the project "Die Welt der Kinder:
Weltwissen und Weltdeutung in Schul- und Kinderbüchern zwischen 1850 und 1918"
[children's worlds: knowledge and interpretation of the world in  textbooks and
children's books from 1850 to 1918], subject to the Leibniz competition for
excellence. Here, DIPF collaborates with the Georg-Eckert Institute for
International Textbook Research (Brunswick) and the Institute for Language
Technology and Information Science (University of Hildesheim).

The project targets research into historical textbooks and children's books -
and the analysis of world views children grew up with. In the project, classical
qualitative methods used in historical sciences to analyse texts that are
charged with interpretation will be interlinked with automatic indexing and
semantic annotation of historical sources by means of semantic language
processing methods. First and foremost, Topic Detection and Opinion Mining
methods will be explored and further developed. So far, no training data exist
for the analysis of historical texts in German. Thus, the appointment addresses
a genuine task in the context of innovative digital humanities, targeting the
implementation of unsupervised and adaptive language processing methods. Another
innovative aspect concerns the close collaboration with users and the linkage of
intellectual with automated methods of analysis.

The position is integrated into a highly dynamic environment at DIPF and TU
Darmstadt. At DIPF, the successful candidate will co-operate with researchers in
the growing domain of "Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing", with computer science
and educational research groups and information services, e.g. the Research
Library for  the History of Education (BBF) at DIPF. At TU Darmstadt, a close
co-operation exists concerning the UKP Lab (Prof. Dr. Iryna Gurevych), and
research groups focusing text and data mining as well as partners from digital
humanities projects at Darmstadt and at national levels (DARIAH-DE, CLARIN and
LOEWE priority "Digital Humanities" in the state of Hesse).

GSCL doctoral thesis award in memory of Wolfgang Hoeppner

The GSCL is to award a prize for an excellent doctoral thesis in the field of
language technology respectively computational linguistics once every two years,
the thesis must be submitted in one of the disciplines or its areas. Candidates
should already have defended their work (viva voce). On submission to this first
round of applications for the award, less than 36 months should have passed
since viva voca. Prior nomination for other awards is permitted. Theses from all
German-speaking countries are acceptable (Austria, Germany and Switzerland) as
well as from any other country, as long as they are focused on the German
language.

(pdf format required):

The Research & Development group of Thomson Reuters
(http://labs.thomsonreuters.com) is looking for hands-on research
scientists or research engineers to grow the team and help drive
innovation at Thomson Reuters. This position is for our newly established
London R&D location. We are looking for a scientist who is passionate
about solving hard problems, who can design and develop prototypes to
demonstrate the art of possible and enjoys engaging the business to
explore opportunities.This position requires expertise in areas related to
organizing, finding, modelling and understanding of information from large
amounts of text and data feeds. Such areas include natural language
processing (summarisation, understanding, natural language text
generation, question answering, dialog management), information
extraction, text mining, data mining, applied machine learning/statistical
language modeling, information retrieval, recommender systems, network
analysis, statistical or probabilistic modeling.

DutiesAs a research scientist, you will be responsible for conducting
applied research and in staying current on state-of-the-art methods. You
will be expected to participate in multiple applied research projects and
your duties will include: authoring research plans, performing original
research (designing algorithms or feature sets for machine learning), and
designing experiments, validating key methods at scale and developing
prototypes. You will be expected to author technical reports and
whitepapers to survey areas of R&D to recommend on trends and the state of
the art in our focus areas. In addition, you are encouraged to maintain an
active academic presence through publication and conference attendance. As
a research engineer, a position that falls between research scientist and
software engineer, you will be responsible for system design and
implementation (the research scientist or research engineer distinction is

Qualifications

Qualifications
- Master¹s Degree (required) or Ph.D. (desired) in computer science,
computational linguistics, applied mathematics or a related discipline,
plus relevant industry research experience.
- Solid programming skills (e.g. in Java, Python, Scala, R and/or C/C++)
- Interest in solving real problems with big data creatively
- Background in natural language processing, text mining, and machine
learning/data mining or related field
- Good oral and written communication skills (be able to present to
internal business customers and at external international academic
- Conferences)
- Self-motivated and ready to learn new technologies to turn your ideas
into solutions used by Thomson Reuters customers
- Must be able to interact with diverse groups of technical and
non-technical people
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent research track record in natural language processing, machine
learning, information retrieval, data mining, or related field
- Strong working knowledge of statistical data analysis and experiment
design using R, WEKA, Matlab/Octave, Orange or similar tools
- Experience in hands-on processing, representation and transformation of
large amounts of data
- PhD degree in computer science, computational linguistics, or related
