We currently have an opening for one internship opportunity in Service Solution Design department in IBM’s Almaden Research Center for the summer of 2013. We are Services Research department in reputed IBM’s Almaden Research Center. In our department we conduct research and develop solutions and analytical tools for managing complex services projects involving large outsourcing deals

Some of the research challenges we investigate include: what are the characteristics of an effective service solution? how to measure the quality of a service solution being proposed? how and what can be learned from prior service engagements to improve the quality of future service solutions? How to identify the factors that influence the win outcomes and conduct win prediction analysis? What are the root causes for inefficiencies in a service solution lifecycle management? How to identify similar service solutions? Which service solution sets are candidates for ‘service products’? Etc. We are at the cutting edge of framing problems and defining solutions in the emerging area of Service Science. Answering these questions require multi-disciplinary expertise. Our current projects require expertise in data mining, and statistical machine learning topics. Our team constitutes of people who have expertise in business process management, decision support systems, text analysis, statistical machine learning, simulations and complex software systems engineering. Our team members have won multiple best paper awards from prestigious conferences and journals such as INFORMS and Decision Sciences Journal in the past. We are looking for motivated, self-driven, Ph.D candidates with deep subject matter expertise in data mining, statistical machine learning areas of Computer Science or related fields from top Universities. PhD research fellowship on temporal and spatial search and indexing in Trondheim, Norway

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim,
Norway, is offering a PhD position as part of the centre on Information
Access Disruptions (iAD). Partially funded by the Research Council of Norway
as a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI), iAD is directed by
Microsoft Development Center Norway (MDCN) in collaboration with NTNU and a
number of leading universities.


Information access technology has emerged as one of the most innovative
technology areas impacting a wide range of industries, business models and
even social patterns. As part of iAD, the Norwegian University of Science
and Technology (NTNU) wants to employ a PhD student within one of the
following target areas:

1. Big data analysis.
2. Large-scale analytical query processing.
3. Temporal and spatial search and indexing.

Specific Conditions: The appointment is at salary code 1017, which currently
corresponds to a yearly gross income of NOK 416.300 (equivalent to approx.
EUR 55.500 and USD 75.000).

Our group is highly international and English is the working language.

JCAI 2013 Doctoral Consortium [Applications Due: February 18, 2013]

Students are invited to apply for admission to the doctoral consortium to be held at the IJCAI conference, Bejing, China, August 3-9, 2013.

The doctoral consortium provides an opportunity for Ph.D. students to discuss their research interests and career objectives with established esearchers in AI.

Notification of acceptance: March 28, 2013

Perspective applicants should submit:

1. a two-page extended abstract on their thesis, formatted following the
IJCAI requirements. Accepted abstracts will be included in the IJCAI
Proceedings and be presented briefly at the doctoral consortium.
Acceptance for publication is not a requirement for admission to the
doctoral consortium, but submission is required to apply to the doctoral
consortium.

2. a curriculum vitae (2 pages) with background (name, university),
education (degree sought, year/status in degree, previous degrees),
employment, and relevant experience in research (publications,
presentations, conferences attended, etc).

3. a personal statement (1-2 pages max) with answers to the following

Brave New Ideas should address long term research challenges, point to new research directions, or provide new insights or brave perspectives that pave the way to innovation.
We thus seek contributions that explore innovative and paradigm shifts in conventional theory and practice of multimedia techniques and applications. We also seek to draw attention to methods that differ from the state of art in practice or theory and demonstrate the potential for new ways of thinking. Such papers may arise out of inter-disciplinary work, and may involve cross-disciplinary inputs. Although comprehensive experimental results are not required, at least preliminary results should be presented as proof of concept.

Submission Guidelines

The papers may come from two sources. We expect most papers to come from direct submissions in the “Brave New Idea Program”. These papers will be reviewed in two stages: Extended abstracts (2-pages) will be first filtered by the Brave New Ideas Program Chairs, and then selected papers (up to 10 pages) will undergo a full review plus discussions by the Chairs. Please submit 2-page abstracts in standard ACM MM 2013 format, with the exception that the papers need not be blind.
Meanwhile, at the discretion of the Program Chairs, submissions to regular full paper track may be recommended to the “Brave New Ideas Program” Committee for considerations to be included in the BNI program.

Scholarship on Recommender Systems and Personalization

Subject to a close co-operation with the Zalando GmbH [1], the Knowledge Mining & Assessment Group [2] at Technical University of Darmstadt is offering a

 Zalando Doctoral Scholarship on Recommender Systems and Personalization

Zalando is known for rapid growth and innovative Marketing driven by a young and dynamic team; behind the scenes, it is aiming at creating the best online fashion experience. To that end Zalando is working on cutting edge personalization technologies and recommendations. The Knowledge Mining & Assessment Group at TU Darmstadt headed by Prof. Dr. Ulf Brefeld focuses on machine learning and information retrieval. The cooperation with Zalando offers an outstanding access to novel problem settings and real data at enterprise-level scales. We will collaborate closely with the Recommendations Group and the Data Intelligence Team at Zalando. Regular visits at the Zalando Headquarters in Berlin are encouraged. 

Requirements for application

Excellently qualified graduates from the disciplines of computer science, mathematics, statistics, and related studies are invited to apply. Successful candidates are expected to possess very good programming skills in Python (Hadoop, Java, C/C++ skills are a bonus), to work independently, demonstrate their personal commitment, team and communication skills as well as a readiness to cooperate. Experience in recommender systems, machine learning, and information retrieval and processing methods would be appreciated. 

The scholarship is granted for 36 months for completing a doctoral thesis. The successful candidate will be granted 1,400 Euros per month (tax free). Women and people with disabilities are expressly invited to submit their application.

PhD Positions in Mobile and Social Computing available @ Dalian Univ. of Tech., China

The Mobile and Social Computing Laboratory at Dalian University of Technology (DUT Phone Lab) conducts interdisciplinary, application-driven academic research in mobile and social computing. We are interested in a broad spectrum of cutting-edge research into mobile social computing, network science, and cyber-physical systems, from theoretical foundations, through design and implementation, to real-world applications, as well as education. We are working on critical enabling technologies for building systems and services that bridge the Cyber, Physical, and Social Worlds, with focus on e.g. social network analysis, ad hoc social networks, smart communities and systems, emotion, memory, and storytelling. 

 
We are opening 2 PhD student positions in mobile and social computing. All positions will be coupled to full Chinese Government Scholarships. Basic living allowance will be 2,000 RMB/month, plus Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit. The scholarships are exempt from registration fee, tuition, and fee for basic learning materials. Accommodation on campus will be provided for free. The University will offer excellent working conditions.
