nnouncing the WSTNet Web Science Summer School 2016 (WWSSS’16)

Announcing the WSTNet Web Science Summer School 2016 (WWSSS’16)
http://wwsss16.west.uni-koblenz.de

The WSTNet Web Science Summer School 2016 will take place from 30 June to 6 July in Koblenz (Germany).

Keynotes and tutorials will provide participants with an insight into the key areas of Web Science:
  • Introduction to Web Science,
  • Computational Social Science,
  • Social Machines,
  • Web and Politics,
  • Web Entrepreneurship,
  • Web and Law.

We know that sustainable learning requires both receiving information and applying it. That is why at WWSSS’16, participants will consolidate their insights from tutorials and keynotes in project work, supervised by experts in the related fields.

Invited speakers and tutors include Jim Hendler, Noshir Contractor, Stéphane Bazan, Nikolaus Forgó, Steffen Staab, Markus Strohmaier, Elena Simperl, Simon Köhl, and others. Beside working in teams, we will provide an inspiring and enjoyable environment with plenty of opportunities to connect with other attendees and established researchers in the field of Web Science. This includes a poster session where participants present their research and obtain feedback on it as well as several social events and an excursion.

WWSSS’16 is the first official summer school of the Web Science Trust Network, an international network of some of the world’s leading academic researchers in Web Science. The 2016 edition is organised in Koblenz, in the UNESCO world heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

Corresponding to the transdisciplinary curriculum, WWSSS’16 welcomes anyone interested in the field of Web Science, regardless of their discipline.

We look forward to meet you in person at WWSSS’16!

Scope:
Knowledge Discovery is an interdisciplinary area focusing upon methodologies for identifying valid, novel, potentially useful and meaningful patterns from data, often based on underlying large data sets. A major aspect of Knowledge Discovery is data mining, i.e. applying data analysis and discovery algorithms that produce a particular enumeration of patterns (or models) over the data. Knowledge Discovery also includes the evaluation of patterns and identification of which add to knowledge.
Information retrieval (IR) is concerned with gathering relevant information from unstructured and semantically fuzzy data in texts and other media, searching for information within documents and for metadata about documents, as well as searching relational databases and the Web. Automation of information retrieval enables the reduction of what has been called "information overload".
Information retrieval can be combined with knowledge discovery to create software tools that empower users of decision support systems to better understand and use the knowledge underlying large data sets.

KDIR is part of IC3K, the 8th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management.

IC3K 2016 will be held in conjunction with IJCCI 2016.

Call for Special Sessions: MMM 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland

Call for Special Sessions for the 23rd Multimedia Modelling Conference (MMM2017), Jan 4-6, 2017, Reykjavik Iceland

The 23rd MultiMedia Modeling conference, MMM 2017, will be held in the unique location of Reykjavik, Iceland (http://mmm2017.ru.is/). As the first multimedia conference ever to be held in Iceland, MMM 2017 represents a unique opportunity to visit this exciting location.

At this time we invite you to propose special sessions for MMM 2017. Special sessions are mini-venues, each focusing on one state-of-the-art research direction within the multimedia field. Special session papers, which can be invited or submitted, will supplement the regular research papers and be included in the proceedings of MMM 2017. While a special session may simply present a group of related papers in the regular format, it is preferred to organise the session in a panel format, where authors have reduced time to present their work, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Special session proposals must be submitted by email to the general chairs Björn Þór Jónsson and Cathal Gurrin using subject “MMM2017 Special Session Proposal” by 01/04/16. Proposals will be evaluated based on the relevance to MMM, qualification(s) of the organiser(s) and the quality and community interest of the topic/proposed potential papers. Details of proposals are described below.

On behalf of the MMM 2017 organization,

Björn Þór Jónsson
Cathal Gurrin
MMM 2017 general chairs
