Lessons from the Trenches
It is good that we have many of alumni such as Shweta Suman, who willing to share their "field experience" with us:- faculty and students.
Shweta Suman is 2006 pass out. She was selected in campus for emuzed ( that later became Aricent). ( Others included in her batch are Suma Vastrad, Ambika Bhat, Pradeepa) Currently based in Canada she is sharing her experience.
Here are her professional Tips
"Please advice our students (esp 2nd & 3rd year students) to learn 'atleast' 1 new programming language (Javascripts/Objective C/C#) or 1 new scripting language (Perl/Python/Ruby) in addition to their course material.
Maybe also take up small hobby projects during the semester holidays and demonstrate it to everyone at the beginning of semesters - Explaining how they went about studying the requirements/design/implementation/testing their product.
Here I see that engineering under-grads take up internships in many of the IT companies which
- exposes them to company work culture
- helps them to understand the technology
- develop skill sets (including technical and soft skills)
and hence making them industry ready!
I am not sure how many companies in India would be ready to provide these opportunities to students yet! But the least we students can do is to take up hobby projects and learn how to work in a team/how to work with deadlines/learn complete software development life cycle etc. It would help us in the long run.
Sorry for the long email, Sir! I just wanted to share my experiences/learning with you."
Thanks Shweta Suman for your sharing gesture.
