Post-doctoral position in IR

Information Retrieval Group, School of Computing Science, College of Science and Engineering, University of Glasgow
Salary: Grade 6 / 7 £27,057– £30,434 / £33,242 - £37,394 per annum
Closing date: 29 September 2014.
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate position within the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk). A good quality first degree is essential for this post, and programming skills in C and Java/Python are expected. The candidates should ideally have experience in Linux programming. A background on information retrieval and social media analytics is expected.
The project is part of the EPSRC "TI3 (Towards an Intelligent Information Infrastructure)" programme, and we aim to equip future networks with 'situational awareness', which is knowledge that can help make management decisions about networks and their services in the face of any challenges, whether from (e.g.) component failures, natural disasters, misconfigurations or attacks. Making future networks resilient is supremely important and is a major research activity, especially given the critical nature of networks and the services they support for many areas of society. In this project, research will be carried out over two years jointly at the universities of Glasgow and Lancaster, involving investigators with a wide range of expertise (resilient and autonomic communications, network instrumentation and management, information retrieval and data science), in collaboration with leading industrial partners in the areas of networked safety-critical systems, industrial control networks, and hardware-accelerated custom compute platforms.
The research is concerned with resilience monitoring and management in networked systems and services. More specifically the position covers the following areas of research:
  • Infrastructure-specific context modelling from global and local content analysis in short timescales. The work will involve developing novel techniques to analyse global (social) media and infrastructure/provider-specific feeds in order to link global events with actual or potential incidents that may have adversarial impact on specific infrastructures.
We invite applications from enthusiastic individuals with experience in relevant aspects of Computer Science, or an appropriate, related discipline. The role will require you to engage with external partners and stakeholders, and therefore you should possess excellent communication skills with evidence of working effectively within a team.
The School of Computing Science offers a stimulating environment for research career development. You will join an ambitious research group that is internationally recognised, and will be expected to contribute to the strong profile of the group through participation in the development and publication of research results.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Joemon Jose, email: joemon.jose@glasgow.ac.uk or telephone +44 141 330 1636.
This position has funding for up to 24 months in the first instance.
