TWO SALARIED PHD POSITIONS IN MACHINE TRANSLATION

TWO SALARIED PHD POSITIONS IN MACHINE TRANSLATION AT DUBLIN CITY UNIVERSITY - Marie Curie ITN project EXPERT

------

Applications are invited for two salaried 3-year Early Stage Researcher PhD positions in corpus-based approaches to machine translation. The positions have been awarded as part of the new EU FP7 Marie-Curie Initial raining Network EXPERT
(http://expert-itn.eu), concerned with the exploitation of empirical approaches to machine translation, including statistical machine translation and example-based machine translation.

The EXPERT project puts together researchers from six European universities (The University of Sheffield, Universidad de Malaga, Universitaet des Saarlandes, Dublin City University, Universiteit van Amesterdam, and University of Wolverhampton) and five translation services and technology providers (Pangeanic, Hermes and Translated, Celer Soluciones and WordFast).

The two projects allocated to Dublin City University are:
      (i) the investigation of how individual corpus-based translation approaches (TM, EBMT and SMT) can benefit from each other; and
(ii) investigation of the ideal infra-structure for a computer-aided translation: a pipeline with NLP tools for pre/post-processing, SMT, EBMT and TM techniques which can form the basis of a hybrid CAT tool.

The work in both projects will focus on truly hybrid data-driven approaches to MT, in order to ultimately help facilitate the work of human translators. The research will be conducted as part of the MT group at the National Centre for Language Technology (NCLT) (http://www.nclt.dcu.ie/mt/) and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) (http://www.cngl.ie) in Dublin City University, with opportunities for collaborative work with several of the leading universities and industrial partners in EXPERT, and with the expectation of a 6-month secondment to 2-3 partners in this project. The team聮s location at DCU, just minutes from Dublin city centre, offers a conducive environment to research, collaboration and innovation with a wealth of amenities on campus, including restaurants, the state-of-the-art University Sports Complex and swimming pool and the Helix, one of Ireland聮s most impressive arts venues with three separate auditoria.

SALARY DETAILS
-----------------------
The successful individual will be employed as a salaried researcher at Dublin City University, while studying towards his/her PhD. Salary rates and additional mobility and training allowances are as per the Marie Curie programme. For employment in the Ireland, the reference figure for gross salary is 41,458 euros/year (before both employer and employee contributions to tax/pension/national insurance etc. subject to the regulations of the host country), plus additional contribution towards mobility and training.

The post is fixed term for three years with a start date of 14 January 2013 or soon after.

Scientific Software Engineer "Natural Language Processing

Scientific Software Engineer "Natural Language Processing for
Interactive Linking" at UKP Lab, Technische Universität Darmstadt,
Germany The Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) Lab has an opening for

a scientific software engineer

to create natural language processing (NLP) components for linking
unstructured text documents, work on an integrated toolkit for effective
NLP software development based on UIMA, and maintain a demo platform for
NLP applications. Manually enriching the text content with links to
other knowledge sources such as forums or Twitter is a tedious task. The
resulting automatic system will support users in using these sources to
find the relevant information. This is beneficial for example for
self-directed learning as well as for traditional classroom teaching.
The languages to be processed are English and German. The resulting
software will be made available in the Darmstadt Knowledge Processing
Software Repository, documented and released for use by the research
community: www.ukp.tu-darmstadt.de/research/current-projects/dkpro/
The position is ideal for individuals who have just completed their
studies and aim to collect work experience in a highly productive,
dynamic scientific work environment before moving on to a scientific or
an industrial career.

The position is initially limited to two years starting at the soonest
possible date. The payment is according to the German TV-TU public
service scale. The employment contract is subject to the final approval
of the project by the funding agency.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in computer science
and/or computational linguistics (M.Sc. or B.Sc.) and demonstrate very
good skills in software engineering and analytical thinking. Previous
work experience in one of the topics outlined above is a definite asset,
but is not an absolute requirement. Further, we expect excellent
communication skills and the ability to effectively cooperate in a team.

Mandatory:
- strong programming skills in Java and previous experience with the
relevant technologies (e.g. Eclipse IDE, JUnit, Maven);
- experience with developing Web applications (e.g. Apache Wicket,
Apache Tomcat, HTML, CSS, Javascript).

Optional:
- background in natural language processing and / or machine learning;
- experience with component-based systems (e.g. Spring Framework, Apache
UIMA); experience with open-source development, refactoring, issue
tracking.

The focus of UKP Lab (www.ukp.tu-darmstadt.de) led by Prof. Dr. Iryna
Gurevych is on semantic information management, computational analysis
of user generated content and applied lexical semantic processing.
The group features a dynamic work environment, a highly motivated and
integrated research team and a substantial industrial cooperation
network. Since its establishment in summer 2006, it has received several
awards for fundamental research and sparked several open-source software
projects widely known in the community. Darmstadt is located in the
southern part of the Rhine Main Area, which hosts one of the strongest
IT-Clusters in Germany. The city is easily reachable in the center of
Germany: not even half an hour away from the Rhine-Main International
Airport in Frankfurt.

Interested candidates should send their application (CV, certificates,
references to software projects) to Prof. Dr. Iryna Gurevych and Nicolai
Erbs (preferably by email:
{gurevych, erbs} (at) ukp (dot) informatik (dot) tu-darmstadt (dot) de).
Please direct any inquiries regarding this post to Nicolai Erbs.

Application deadline: December 15, 2012
Later applications will be considered as long as the position is not
filled. Upon consideration, you will be asked to complete some
assignments in software development.
